Security window films are used to protect areas where threat of break and enter through glass is prominent (doors with glass, office windows, etc.). The recommended thickness of the Security window film is 12 mil with a break strength of no less than 325 lbs./sq.in. The window film should be installed on the inside surface of the glass and whenever possible the window film should be anchored to the frame using Dow Corning 995 structural glazing adhesive. There are several methods of installing the window film with different methods for different types of glass (tempered, laminated and annealed);
The preferred installation of the window film is to remove the glass stops or frames and install the window film to within 1/8” of the edge of the glass. The stops should be re-installed over top of the security window. A bead of Dow Corning 995 silicone can then be applied to the frame anchoring the window film to the frame. If the removal of the frames is not possible it is acceptable to install the security window film to the glass without removing the frames.
The security window film should be installed to within 1/8″ of the frame and then finished with a 3/16” tooled triangular bead of 995 silicone to all edges of the frame. If the silicone is not desirable it is acceptable to install the security window film without the silicone.
Laminated Glass: Same installation recommendations as annealed glass.
Tempered Glass: The security window film must be anchored to the frame with silicone and wherever possible the security window film should be installed behind or under the frame. Without exception, the security window film must be anchored to the frame with silicone.
